Hey James! Thanks for stopping by.

Please don't stop the 'nation! It's a great resource and would be sorely missed.

Even though I am not using DP nearly as much as I used to, your site is one of my daily stops. It is one of the most cohesive communities out there, and that comes directly from the effort you (and Shooshie, et al.,) put in to it.

Christopher posted this a year and a half ago; It would be interesting to know whatever became of his efforts at a personal "DP revival" or if he's become a regular contributor to Motunation...

Cheers.

Well, I happened across this thread, and I will apologize now to Christopher for being "inane." But frankly, as also mentioned I'm just a guy like you guys, trying to make music, do other things. The board isn't my job. You, Christopher, manage to go there and get help, so it's not entirely useless. So keep in mind that I'm not getting paid and that making life easier for you isn't my calling. I've turned off the gmail block temporarily and got flooded immediately. Maybe I'll install a MOD for verification, but that is when I have time to do so.

Why do people like you criticize free resources created by musicians just like you voluntarily? I don't see you starting a board and trying to help others. I wasn't obligated to create the board, or run it, or make it as perfect as you'd like it to be. It's there... use it... or don't. Frankly, my life would probably be more productive if I just shut the whole thing down tomorrow... then you couldn't complain about the gmail restriction.

By the way, most people have an ISP or another email address besides gmail. You came up with one somehow. You know, I knew running a board was thankless, but I really had no idea.

No worries. :-) <del datetime="2009-07-15T19:36:55+00:00">You know, if you are getting back into the DP world, it may be worthwhile establishing a yahoo mail account or something just for that purpose.</del> (Oops. Just noticed you kinda did that!) There's really no other DP info source like MOTUNATION. A bit of a PIA, but the payoff may be worth it.

In the meantime, give LOGIC + MacProVideo a shot if you have the time. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Cheers.

thanks for the response. sorry if i came off as harsh, it was a frustrating day lol. i've been very remiss in updating my blog lately, but so far i haven't had any problem with spam comments on my blog. i use the captcha that comes with blogger, that's it. you also have to choose a radio button for the type of account you are. you can post anonymously but you have to choose that option, it's not the default (a google account login is). but i think i've had like two spam comments the entire time i've had the blog. and i think that was before i enabled the captcha.

i haven't played with dp again since i posted here. i finally signed up on the board with an old useless email i had and may have gotten an answer to my problem. still want to make music, but it's very frustrating not being able to just make music because you have to figure out this crazy program. i was very surprised how confusing to me it was, especially after being such a power user of it years ago. didn't think it would be that unfamiliar.

ironically though i work in post-production for film (vfx), i don't have much need for post work with dp, so i wouldn't miss that if logic isn't as strong there.

thanks again for the response!

Hi Christopher.

I didn't realize that James banned all gmail addresses. That does seem extreme. At the same time, if he hasn't figured out how to prevent spam, I understand it. I have had 1565 spam comments (most from servers with a ".ru" domain) in the last 6 months. (This is why btw, all comments are moderated.)

About a thousand of those I had to <em>manually</em> designate as spam. So it became a bit of a morning ritual: Get up grab some coffee go through anywhere from a handful to several dozen comments each day to find the one or two legit entries such as yours. The problem was getting worse and I began to really consider whether or not this blog was worth it. Fortunately I figured out a way to spam things automatically. (But you've got a really nice <a href="http://deep-structure.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">blog</a>, so you must experience this too....Btw, I still need some sort of "CAPTCHA" system for my member list if you have a suggestion.)

Anyway, I could see James just getting fed up and banning the whole domain. Not the best approach IMHO but he works hard and is unpaid to run that board so...

As far as dumping DP: I blow hot and cold on it. I'm currently kind of cold. DP has lots of advantages for post-production and seems to be (based on my scant knowledge and experience plus general buzz/consensus) still significantly ahead of LOGIC in that regard. However, DPs performance is increasingly problematic in my view. Other hosts seem much more efficient and stable particularly if you use a lot of virtual instruments.

As far as LOGIC goes: It is NOT that hard to get your head around, but it is definitely a different way of working compared to DP. Something that helped me tremendously is the set of video tutorials from <a href="http://www.macprovideo.com/browse/logic" rel="nofollow">MacProVideo</a>. I think they even have a set of tutorials looking specifically at using LOGIC for post-production.

found this post after doing a search for motunation looking for anyway to contact the people there. it may be an excellent board, but i was trying to join it and they've banned the entire gmail.com domain because of porn spam problems! i've never heard of any online organization doing anything so inane. banning an entire set of email users because motunation can't figure out how to stop spam?? that's ridiculous. and of course, i can't contact them to complain (as gmail is my only email address), because you have to register to contact them!! pretty friggin' ridiculous in my opinion.

i've recently tried to start using dp again. i used to be a major power user of it back in 1999, but then stopped for years. trying to re-familiarize myself with it again now is incredibly frustrating and i've been very tempted to dump it for logic or something else. this latest development with motunation has not done anything to alleviate that feeling.
